The video above shows the effectiveness of authoritarian leadership style. In this situation, the boat was sinking fast and there was no time to consult any team member. This style encourages open communication among members. the exercise is T to encourage young people to have a voice and that means that demotic leadership style. everyone take part in participatory approach. The style is also completely people orientated .
If we swap the above styles of leadership around, these could happen: Video 1 : the person might drown because it takes time consult members and could be even more worse if they stop argue plan out. in some situations you need to go and to job and the commands should straightforward. Video 2 : if autocratic styles is used, there could be anger , fights and walkouts. Ii also defeats that voice of young people. may feel that it worthless and might speak it try their hardest. No motivation to stand up for themselves. Skills and qualities to be a successful leader 1. Solve problems effectively 2. Able to command effectively with communication skills 3. Able to encourage confident and motivate the team 4. to have strong negation skills Role of the team leader The role of a team leader is to lead the group by planning and implementing the task. Therefore, it is important that the leader has good communication skills . -Skill: communication and risks taking skills Example: firefighting services Scenario: The leader should be able to give clear and direct commends in a very time critical situation -Skill : solve problems effectively Example: rescue service Scenario : Rescuing a man who is trapped The team needs to solve the problems of the terrain of where to get him and how to get the victim out. -Skill : negotiation skills Example : Police force; for example hostage situation Scenario : A hostage is held and the leader exercises the negotiation skills to ask the captor to release the hostage. |
Scenario
You are working within the Human Resources Department of a Public Service of your choice. You have just recruited a number of Officers who need to develop their leadership skills. As part of the training course you must create a website that outlines all of the different leadership styles. After your initial training, as a new leader, you have been asked to find out a little bit more about different leadership styles. You have been asked by your line Manager to focus your website on 2 contrasting leadership styles. You have been asked to provide examples of when these styles are used in the Public Services and you have been asked to comment on their effectiveness. Assignment 1 , describe leadership styles. give a public services scenario best suited. use video to support your comments You must comment on particular public services that these styles would be best suited. Authoritarian Definition : It means that one person says that this is how it goes and that no one should question it . Strengths : It allows things to be quickly done and it also allows a simplification of the orders and is sometimes more time effective. Weakness : It is not that effective in a task when you have to work with people who are aggressive and they may not what to follow you if you consistently order them what to do. Scenario : A building is on fire and there are people trapped and the fire is spreading fast. The firefighters arrive and the leader uses authoritarian leadership. It works because you need to get into action fast with no questions asked as the fire is fast spreading. So you can not waste time for discussion and you need to allocate positions immediately Democratic Definition: When the leader is a head of the group ,the groups members still can say what they want to say and the leader listen to them. Strengths: It allows more opinions to be heard which improves quality of work It also allows the person to receive advice from others. Besides, it helps to develop a good team relationship. Weakness: It may cause a lot of arguing between members of the group. Scenario : The government consultation eg such as the discrimination review. The leader consults members of the general public for their opinions and but he still has final decision. Strengths: It allows people to make their opinion heard. It also allows more flexible. In addition, it allows the leader to relax directing and reduces leader's workload. Weakness: This style of leadership may cause the plan to lose the focus because it may have too many ideas that are different to each other . The team members may not preform well. Scenario: You are a juror and you can decide your verdict if the the defendant is innocent or guilty and the judge passes the sentence. You are required to follow the direction given by the judge. Transactional Definition : It means that you are motivated by rewards and punishment. Strength: The strengths are that there is both a carrot and a stick. It suits most people because we like rewards. Weakness : Some people might not want either rewards or punishment.They might not motivated by the punishment. Scenario : You are a police officer and you need to arrest someone. You say to follow colleges that there will be a pay increase should you succeed and a drop in pay if it doesn't not work. Transformational Definition : You show vision of what you want to be. Strengths It helps motivate people because vision is a very powerful thing and people sometimes like that . You show what you want it to be and it may have a more powerful effect. Weakness : People may not agree with you and may try and present their on vision Scenario : You are in government and you need to impliment party policy and you call your follow members and tell them the vision that is demanded by you and the party. People Orientated Definition : You focused on team relationship Strength : It means that the team member can trust you and also you can relate to the team. It also takes away the stress of trying to mange everything yourself. It also may help to increase the quality of work. Weakness : The team may let you down even though you have good relationship with them. may fight among themselves and you can have members exerting a lot of Domenico Scenario : You are trying to implement government polices over a wide area. you need to have a good relationship with you team members to implement these polices. Task orientated : Definition: You are focused on completing the task. Strengths : It allows you a clear focus of the task. It may allow you to focus on the major aspects of the task. Weakness : You might not see the big picture. You might miss stuff out surrounding the task. It lacks of flexibility. Scenario : In public health, for example, you are focused on the task of keeping the public healthy by aiming to provide good service. Paternalistic Task Definition : " Paternalistic leadership is a managerial approach that involves a dominant authority figure who acts as a patriarch or matriarch and treats employees and partners as though they are members of a large, extended family. In exchange, the leader expects loyalty and trust from employees, as well as obedience. " loyal subordinates as staff feel protected and cared for with a low rate of labour turnover which will reduce recruitment costs and improve competitiveness " Disadvantages : " do not encourage their employees to use their creative and imaginative skills, do not encourage use of initiative meaning that the business does not make the most effective use of its human resources " Sianr1o : Then for the scenario I think that this would be would be when a business manger is retiring and bringing in a family member to replace him. Paternlastic is being used by the fact that the person is peppering the successor and intoducing him the leaderships styles.
